Is Ohuhu good for beginners?

If you’re just starting out with alcohol markers, you might be wondering, “Are Ohuhu markers a good choice for me?” The answer is a resounding yes! Ohuhu markers are perfect for beginners, thanks to their mix of quality, versatility, and affordability. Let’s dive into why they’re such a great option if you’re just beginning your coloring journey.

Why Ohuhu Markers Are Great for Beginners

One of the biggest challenges when you're starting out is finding markers that won't break the bank but still offer excellent quality. Ohuhu markers do just that. They're affordable, which is especially important when you're getting the hang of things and experimenting with your new markers. But even though they’re affordable, they don’t compromise on color quality. Ohuhu markers give you rich, bright hues that will make your artwork stand out. So, you can practice freely, without stressing about expensive replacements.

Dual Tips: A Perfect Choice for New Artists

Ohuhu markers come with dual tips, which means you get two types of tips in one marker! You can use the fine tip for delicate details and smaller lines, and the brush tip for wider strokes and smooth blending. There’s also the chisel tip, which is great for covering larger areas or making bold, thick lines. With these three options, you can explore different techniques and really get creative. It’s perfect for beginners who are still figuring out their style!

Great Sets for Beginners: Choose What’s Right for You

Ohuhu offers sets with a variety of colors. So many sets, that it can be tricky to find the best one for you. In this article, I am going to list some of the best sets for beginners, but make sure to check out all of their sets and choose the one, that you want!

Of course, you don’t need to start with a huge set. Many beginners find that a smaller set - like the 24 or 36-color sets - gives them enough options to learn about color theory and blending. Once you get more comfortable, you can always expand your collection. But, I'll admit, I started with the biggest set of them all (with the 320 Honolulu set) and I am super happy with my choice.

Let's explore some amazing sets for you as a beginner:

1. Ohuhu Honolulu 45-Color Set

This is an excellent starter set with a variety of basic colors, including pastels, vibrant shades and black. With 48 colors, you can practice blending and color theory without being overwhelmed by too many choices.

Explore this set on eu.ohuhu.com ➜

2. Ohuhu Honolulu 120-Color Set

For those who want a more variety and a bigger collection the 120-color set offers a broader range of tones, including more neutral colors for shading and blending. It’s a great next step if you’re ready to experiment with more complex projects.

Explore this set on eu.ohuhu.com ➜

3. Ohuhu 320-Color Set

The 320-color set is the biggest one of all! Of course, you don't need such big set as a beginner, but for some people (like me) the big set is the right choice. For me, this set gives me maximum freedom and it fuels my creativity! It’s ideal for beginners who are serious about their craft and want to work on more detailed projects.

Pro tipp: If your goal is to have every shade there is from Ohuhu, you might want to invest in the 320 set from the beginning. If you combine the 320 set with the Ohuhu Honolulu 36 Skin Tone set (explore this set here) you have every single shade there is.

Helpful Tips for Beginners Using Alcohol Markers by Ohuhu

  • Swatch all Shades: Every Ohuhu set comes with a handy swatch chart. Use this chard to swatch all colors, ideally before you start with your coloring journey. This will give you a wonderful introduction to all the shades and help you get started.
  • Test on Scrap Paper First: Before you start coloring your project, it’s always a good idea to test your markers on a piece of scrap paper. This will help you see how the colors look and how the marker flows.
  • Layer Slowly: When you’re blending colors, start with a light layer and build up gradually. This will help you create smooth transitions and avoid streaks.
  • Experiment with Blending: The brush tip on Ohuhu markers is perfect for blending. You can try blending two colors while they’re still wet to create beautiful gradients.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes: Remember, it’s okay if things don’t turn out perfectly the first time! The more you practice, the better you’ll get.

Community and Support: Learn from Others

Another great benefit of using Ohuhu markers as a beginner is the supportive online community. There are many tutorials, reviews, and tips available online that cater specifically to beginners. On platforms like YouTube and Instagram, you can find detailed guides on how to use your markers, color blending techniques, and even step-by-step tutorials on creating specific projects. Many experienced artists are also happy to offer advice and feedback to help you improve your skills.

Being part of the Ohuhu user community is also a lot of fun! As you improve, you'll have the opportunity to share your own artwork and connect with others. In my experience, the coloring community is one of the most supportive communities out there! You can also ask for tips on how to improve your coloring techniques or learn new methods to enhance your work.

3 Color combinations to try as a beginner

1. Sunset Glow

  • Ohuhu Color: Rose Red (R17)
  • Ohuhu Color: Dark Yellow (Y15)
  • Ohuhu Color: Orange (O11)

This combination mimics a warm sunset, with soft reds, oranges, and yellows blending perfectly.

2. Tropical Breeze

  • Ohuhu Color: Turquoise Blue (B27)
  • Ohuhu Color: Bright Yellow (Y13)
  • Ohuhu Color: Deep Green (G31)

These three colors will give you that fresh, vibrant tropical feel. Perfect for creating beach scenes or lush tropical leaves.

3. Autumn Leaves

  • Ohuhu Color: Brick Red (R12)
  • Ohuhu Color: Dark Brown (E18)
  • Ohuhu Color: Olive Green (G51)

If you're working on fall-inspired artwork, these rich and earthy tones are ideal for creating autumn leaves and landscapes. The red and green complement each other, while the brown helps add depth.

Storage of Alcohol Markers by Ohuhu: Keeping Your Markers Safe

Taking care of your markers will ensure they last longer. Ohuhu recommends to store your markers flat, rather than standing them up. Storing them horizontally helps the ink stay evenly distributed, so your markers will continue to work smoothly. (Quick side note: I store them vertically in the box they came in, and they are fine 😉 )

But it's generally very important to keep your markers in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and heat. Excessive heat can dry out the ink and affect the colors. If you’re worried about organization, you can use a storage box. There are many great storage options on Amazon. Ohuhu also offers some great options to keep everything neat and tidy.

Conclusion: Start Your Creative Journey with Ohuhu Markers

In conclusion, Ohuhu markers are a fantastic choice for beginners. They’re easy to use, affordable, and give you great results every time. With a variety of colors and tips, you can explore and experiment with different techniques, improving your skills as you go.

How to Host A Coloring Party: The Ultimate Step by Step Guide

Hosting a coloring party is a joyful way to connect with loved ones, foster creativity, and spend time together in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Whether you’re planning a small gathering with friends, a fun activity for family, or even a virtual event, a coloring party can bring smiles to everyone’s faces. Let’s walk through a detailed guide on how to plan and host a magical coloring party that leaves everyone feeling inspired.

1. Planning Your Coloring Party with Love

Before you dive into the details, take a moment to reflect on the purpose of your party. Are you creating a relaxing space for mindfulness? Celebrating a milestone, a birthday or a bachelorette? Or simply gathering to have fun? A coloring party is a wonderful way to connect with others, it's especially amazing if you have a theme!

Choosing a Coloring Theme

Themes give your party a unique touch and tie everything together. Ideas like "Birthday", "Bachelorette", "Baby Shower", "Cats", “Floral Fantasy,” “Animal Adventures,” or “Abstract Patterns” can guide your selection of coloring pages, decorations, and even refreshments. Check our hand-drawn coloring pages that are super cute and amazing for many different themes! Explore our coloring pages here

Setting a Date and Time

Choose a time when guests can fully unwind and enjoy themselves. Weekends or late afternoons work well for most people. Start a poll to let everyone vote, if scheduling might become a problem.

2. Preparing Materials That Delight

Having the right supplies can elevate your coloring party from a casual gathering to a truly unforgettable experience! I made this experience myself... a colorful set of Ohuhu alcohol-based markers can change everything! Let’s dive into the tools of the trade:

Curate Your Coloring Pages

You can either offer a variety of coloring pages suited to your theme or offer only one page - both ideas are amazing! If you offer a variety of coloring pages, you can include options for different skill levels. If you offer just one page, you can compare after the coloring session, which is A LOT of fun usually. Just make sure that the page is generally easy to color. At pokiandkiwi.com we provide beautiful, printable designs that appeal to all ages and abilities. Explore our coloring pages here

Essential Coloring Tools

1. Colored Pencils

A classic choice, colored pencils are perfect for creating intricate designs and layering colors. Look for artist-quality brands like Prismacolor or Faber-Castell for smooth application and vibrant hues. They’re also easy to erase, making them ideal for beginners.

2. Markers (Alcohol-Based)

Markers provide bold, vibrant colors that pop off the page. Alcohol-based markers, like Copic or Ohuhu, are popular among enthusiasts for their smooth blending capabilities. Having a bit set like the 320 set by Ohuhu can elevate every coloring party! People generally love those colors as they blend smoothly. 3. Crayons

A nostalgic favorite, crayons are simple and fun to use. Modern crayons come in a variety of forms, including glitter, metallic, and even watercolor crayons. Their affordability and ease of use make them perfect for kids or large groups.

4. Gel Pens

For those who love intricate details, gel pens are a fantastic choice. They’re available in metallic, glitter, and neon finishes, adding a dazzling effect to your designs. Use them to enhance outlines or create eye-catching highlights. Many coloring enthusiasts combine alcohol-based markers (for example by Ohuhu) with gel pens, creating amazing results!

5. Pastels

Soft pastels and oil pastels offer a unique texture and richness. They’re great for blending colors and creating a soft, dreamy effect. Although a bit messier than other tools, they’re worth considering for their creative potential.

6. Watercolor Pencils

A versatile tool, watercolor pencils allow you to add a splash of water for a painterly effect. They’re perfect for creating soft, blended backgrounds or adding dimension to your artwork.

Optional Extras

  • Blending Tools: Blending stumps or brushes can help smooth transitions between colors.
  • Paper Types: Use heavier paper or cardstock or simple printer paper.
  • Accessories: You can include erasers, sharpeners, and a few spare tools to accommodate everyone’s needs.

3. Creating a Warm Ambiance

Setting the scene is about making your guests feel comfortable and welcomed. A warm, inviting atmosphere encourages everyone to relax and enjoy the experience.

Decorations

Stick to your chosen theme to inspire the party décor. For example, a “Nature’s Wonders” theme could include potted plants, floral garlands, and wood-textured table settings. Simple touches like colorful tablecloths or fairy lights can instantly brighten the space.

Soothing Background Music

Music and art go hand in hand! Create a playlist to enhance the creative ambiance. Whatever floats your boat is fine, just make sure it's not something your guests hate... 🙂

Thoughtful Refreshments

Snacks and drinks add to the festive mood. Choose finger foods like cookies, mini sandwiches, or veggie platters that are easy to enjoy while coloring. Offer a mix of beverages, such as tea, water, lemonade to keep guests refreshed.

4. Hosting the Party: Step-by-Step

A Warm Welcome

Welcoming guests is always a bit nerve-racking.. will everyone enjoy the theme? Will they hate coloring? Try to ignore those fears and go with the flow! Introduce the theme and coloring tools and let everyone react however they feel at that point.

Dive into Coloring

Encourage everyone to pick their favorite coloring pages and tools. Let them know it’s not about perfection; it’s about enjoying the moment. This gentle reminder helps create a judgment-free space where everyone feels at ease. Never pressure someone to color or use specific tools, let them decide and go from there.

Interactive Activities

  • Show and Tell: Let guests showcase their finished pieces and share their creative process.
  • Collaborative Coloring: Work together on a large coloring page or mural for a fun, shared experience.
  • Friendly Competitions: Host lighthearted contests with categories like “Most Creative” or “Best Use of Color.” Offer small prizes or handmade keepsakes.

5. Quick Intro to Virtual Coloring Parties

Virtual coloring parties are a wonderful way to connect across distances. If you’re considering one, you’ll find all the tips and tricks you need in this detailed guide from Poki and Kiwi: How to Host a Virtual Coloring Party.

6. Adding Mindfulness and Joy

Coloring isn’t just fun... it’s also a form of mindfulness. Use your party as an opportunity to introduce relaxation and self-care to your guests, if you like. Read below how you can incorporate mindfulness into your coloring party.

Encourage Relaxation

Invite your guests to take their time and focus on the process rather than the outcome. Share the idea that coloring can be meditative, helping to quiet the mind and bring a sense of calm.

Share Gratitude

As the host, your energy sets the tone. Celebrate each guest’s creativity, offer kind words of encouragement, and express gratitude for their presence. These simple gestures make the event more meaningful.

7. Parting Gifts and Final Touches

Sending guests home with a small token of appreciation leaves a lasting impression.

DIY Goodie Bags

Fill goodie bags with thoughtful items like mini coloring books, a small set of gel pens, or even a printout of your favorite coloring page. Add a handwritten thank-you note for a personal touch.

Capture the Moment

Take group photos or snapshots of everyone’s artwork (with their permission). Share these memories after the party as a fun way to reminisce and reconnect.

Conclusion

Hosting a coloring party is a simple yet meaningful way to bring people together, spark creativity, and foster joy. Whether it’s a cozy family gathering or a lively celebration with friends, the thoughtful touches you add will make your event truly special.

With this guide, you’re ready to create a memorable experience filled with laughter, connection, and colorful creativity. So, gather your supplies, pick a theme, and let the fun begin!

Whether you love lifelike depictions, playful and whimsical designs, or something that strikes a balance between the two, there’s a coloring page for everyone. They’re ideal for anyone who enjoys shading techniques, experimenting with realistic color palettes, or simply wants to create a true-to-life masterpiece. Kawaii Cat Coloring Pages

Popular in anime and chibi art styles, kawaii coloring sheets are perfect for fans of all things sweet and whimsical. How to Host a Virtual Coloring Party with Friends and Family

Hosting a virtual coloring party is a wonderful way to connect with loved ones, no matter where they are. Coloring together can be relaxing, creative, and just plain fun. Whether it’s for a birthday, holiday, or simply a chance to catch up, here’s how to make your virtual coloring party memorable for everyone involved.

1. Planning Your Virtual Coloring Party

Pick a Date and Time

Start by choosing a time that works for everyone. If your guests live in different time zones, find a middle ground that’s convenient. It could be a birthday, random Saturday, New Years Eve or afterwork activity - the possibilities are endless. A quick group poll can help decide the best time! You can create free polls with a tool like Poll Maker or ask in a group chat.

Choose a Platform

Decide which video call platform to use. Zoom, Google Meet, and Skype are all great options. Pick one that’s easy for everyone to join and use. Make sure it allows screen sharing if you want to show the coloring pages during the call.

Send Invites

Create fun digital invitations! Include the date, time, and a link to the video call. Don’t forget to mention any supplies or pages guests should prepare ahead of time. Adding a personal touch, like a cheerful message or theme, can make the invite extra special.

2. Get the Coloring Pages and Supplies Ready for your coloring party

A good coloring party needs a plan! A theme and good coloring supplies are at the heart of the fun. Let's explore how you can make sure your virtual coloring party is set up the right way.

Pick a Theme

A theme can make your party feel more organized and exciting. Maybe it’s flowers, animals, or something seasonal like autumn leaves or snowflakes. You can download coloring pages with Poki and Kiwi, two cute cats here: Explore coloring pages ➜

Gather the Supplies

Let everyone know what they’ll need... crayons, markers, colored pencils, or even gel pens. Send them the coloring pages you decided on (Explore coloring pages ➜) - or if everyone can choose their own motif, remind them to print them out. If someone doesn't have any art supplies at home, discuss with them what is essential to get before the coloring session and what can be left out.

3. Set Up Your Space

Test Your Tech

Before the party, check that your internet connection, camera, and microphone work well. Ask your guests to do the same so everyone can join smoothly.

Create a Cozy Environment

Set up your coloring space in a comfy, well-lit area. You might want to light a candle or play some soft background music to set a relaxing mood. Encourage your guests to do the same it’s fun to share photos of everyone’s setups!

4. Hosting the Coloring Party with Friends or Family

Welcome Everyone

If you're family you know each other, if you're friends as well. But, if there are people joining that aren't familiar with everyone, introduce them quickly... but try to not make it formal. 🙂 This is not a business call, this is a fun call!

Explain the Plan

Let everyone know how the coloring session will go. Share your screen to show the coloring pages or send them the files if they need to print them. Keep things simple and clear.

Encourage Sharing

Invite guests to show their progress during the session. Talk about favorite colors or fun ways they’re using the designs. Compliments and friendly conversations make the experience even better.

5. Add Fun to the Party!

Play Music

Soft, relaxing music can make coloring even more enjoyable. You could even make a playlist in advance and share it with your guests. But, make sure, that everyone uses headphones, when music is involved.. you don't want to have weird echo... 🙂

Dress Up for the Theme

If you have a theme, suggest that guests dress to match. For example, for a beach-themed coloring party, they could wear sunglasses or a tropical shirt.

Try Mini Challenges

Add some friendly competition with challenges. You might suggest using only shades of one color or finishing a design in 15 minutes. Give out silly awards like “Most Creative” or “Best Use of Blue.”

6. Show Off Your Artwork

Virtual Art Gallery

At the end of the party, gather everyone together to share their finished (or even halfway finished!) pages. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate each person’s creativity and effort, no matter how their artwork turned out. Encourage everyone to hold up their pages to the camera and talk about what they enjoyed while coloring. Maybe someone tried a bold color combination, or another person added their own unique details to the design. Every piece is worth celebrating!

You can even turn this into a mini “gallery show” by taking screenshots or asking everyone to send photos of their artwork afterward. Compile the pictures into a shared album or slideshow to remember the event. This not only gives everyone a sense of pride in what they’ve created but also inspires each other with fresh ideas.

Remind participants that it’s not about perfection but about enjoying the process. Applaud the creativity, whether it’s a masterpiece or just a fun splash of color. 🙂 These moments of sharing and celebrating makes everyone feel appreciated and connected.

Post on Social Media

If everyone’s comfortable, encourage them to share their artwork online. A unique hashtag for your party can make it easy to see everyone’s posts. It's also fun to compare the coloring pages with others online!

7. After the Coloring Party

Send a Thank-You Note

After the party, take a moment to send a heartfelt thank-you message to everyone who joined. Let them know how much you appreciated their time and creativity, and mention specific highlights from the event. Maybe someone’s vibrant color choices stood out, or perhaps there was a particularly funny or sweet moment that everyone enjoyed. It’s a lovely way to remind everyone of the joy they helped create and let them know how much their participation meant to you. Sharing a group photo or a collection of the artwork can add an extra touch of thoughtfulness.

Plan the Next One

Once the fun of your first coloring party sinks in, why not start planning the next one? Ask your group if they’d like to do it again and invite ideas for making it even more exciting. You could experiment with a new theme, like seasonal designs or a specific color palette, or try out different types of art supplies. If you have a regular group, consider rotating who hosts, giving everyone a chance to bring their unique flair to the event.

8. Why Host a Virtual Coloring Party with Friends or Family?

Relax and Unwind

Coloring is a simple and calming activity that helps take away stress. The smooth motion of filling in shapes and watching bright colors appear can feel like a kind of meditation. Family Coloring: Why Coloring as a Family is a Wonderful Activity

In today’s busy world, finding ways to connect as a family can be a challenge. Between work and school, it’s easy to feel like there’s no time for meaningful moments together. That’s where a simple, creative activity like coloring can make a big difference. Coloring as a family isn’t just fun... it’s a fantastic way to strengthen your bond and create lasting memories.

Why Family Coloring Matters

Coloring isn’t just for kids. It’s an activity that everyone can enjoy, no matter their age. When families color together, they share more than just paper and crayons. They share time, creativity, and laughter. Here are some reasons why family coloring is so special:

  • It encourages togetherness: Sitting around the table to color allows everyone to focus on a shared activity. There’s no need for screens or distractions. It's just you, your family, and some coloring tools.
  • It sparks creativity: Coloring helps kids and adults alike explore their creative sides. You can work on individual designs or collaborate on a large page together.
  • It reduces stress: For both kids and adults, coloring has a calming effect. The repetitive motion of coloring can help everyone unwind and relax after a long day.
  • It’s easy and affordable: All you need are some coloring pages and a set of crayons, markers, or colored pencils. It’s a low-cost activity with endless possibilities.

How Coloring Builds Family Bonds

Family coloring sessions offer more than just pretty pictures. They help build communication, trust, and understanding in ways that feel natural and enjoyable.

1. Encourages Conversations

While you color, conversations flow more naturally. The simple activity creates a calm space that makes talking feel easy. You might chat about your day, share funny stories, or laugh at someone’s colorful masterpiece that didn’t turn out as planned. The relaxed mood helps everyone open up and share more. Even quiet moments while focusing on your art feel cozy and connected. Coloring isn’t just about the art - it’s also about spending time together and growing closer.

2. Strengthens Teamwork

Working together on a big coloring project is a wonderful way for families to build teamwork. Each family member can add their own personal touch to the artwork, whether it’s coloring a section of a drawing or picking out colors that go well together. As everyone works side by side, it’s easy to see how collaboration can create something really special. By helping each other, sharing ideas, and blending different creative styles, you’re not just making a beautiful picture... you’re also learning to support each other and appreciate everyone’s unique contributions. This teamwork can extend beyond the coloring page, helping family members work better together in everyday life, too. Tools and Supplies to Enhance Family Coloring Time

Having the right tools can make your family coloring sessions even more enjoyable. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  1. Crayons: Classic crayons are perfect for younger kids. Look for larger, easy-to-grip crayons for toddlers and high-quality brands like Crayola for vibrant colors.
  2. Colored Pencils: These are great for older kids and adults who want more precision and shading options. Brands like Prismacolor or Faber-Castell offer excellent choices.
  3. Markers: Washable markers are a good choice for families with younger children. For older participants, fine-tip markers (like Ohuhu Markers) can help with intricate designs.
  4. Gel Pens: For a touch of sparkle or metallic effects, gel pens can add a fun element to your creations. They’re especially popular for holiday or special-themed pages.
  5. Coloring Books and Pages: Invest in coloring books with themes that appeal to everyone, such as animals, nature, or holidays. Explore our hand-drawn digital pages you can print at home Explore coloring pages ➜

7 Creative Ways to Use Coloring Pages in the Classroom

Teaching can be both exciting and challenging. Each day, you’re working to inspire your students to learn, imagine, and grow. Keeping them interested, though, isn’t always easy. If you are looking for new classroom activities this article is for you.

Coloring pages might be more than just an activity to pass time - they can encourage creativity, problem-solving, and even teamwork and friendship in your classroom. Let’s look at seven simple and fun ways you could use our cute pages in your classroom to inspire creativity, learning and teamwork.

1. Spark Creativity with Storytelling Adventures

Coloring pages can open the door to new stories. For example, you might give students a Poki and Kiwi page where Poki and Kiwi are playing outside. Once they’ve colored their pictures, you could encourage them to imagine a story about what’s happening. Where might Poki and Kiwi go next? What might they be thinking? What other characters might join them?

Younger students could share their stories out loud, while older ones might enjoy writing theirs down. You could even invite the class to create a group story, with each child adding their own part.

Why it Matters:

  • Boosts Creativity: Coloring and storytelling might inspire students to think outside the box.
  • Encourages Confidence: Sharing their ideas might help students feel proud of their work.
  • Supports Writing Skills: This activity could improve vocabulary and sentence-building skills.

With Poki and Kiwi as their story starters, students might be excited to dive into imaginative adventures.

2. Create Calm Moments with Mindfulness Coloring

Classrooms can sometimes feel hectic - for teachers and for students. When energy runs high, you could use mindful coloring to bring a sense of calm. Hand out Poki and Kiwi coloring pages and ask your students to focus on filling in the pictures with care and creativity. There’s no right or wrong way, just a chance to relax and enjoy the moment.

Mindfulness coloring could help students settle their minds. As they focus on the activity, they might find themselves feeling more centered and ready to learn.

You could also combine this with exercises to promote mindfulness like focusing on your five senses while coloring.

Why it Matters:

  • Encourages Relaxation: Coloring could help students feel calmer during busy days.
  • Improves Focus: Concentrating on the details might strengthen their ability to pay attention.
  • Supports Well-Being: Relaxing activities could make the classroom feel more welcoming.

With Poki and Kiwi’s friendly faces on the pages, this quiet activity might become a favorite for many students.

3. Build Problem-Solving Skills with Interactive Challenges

You could turn coloring into an opportunity to solve problems and think creatively. For example, you might challenge students to:

  • Color Poki’s fur using only two shades.
  • Add extra details to the scene, like a sun or flowers around Kiwi.
  • Work together to decide on a color scheme for a group project.

These small challenges could encourage kids to think in new ways and collaborate with their peers.

Why it Matters:

  • Supports Creative Thinking: Students might find different ways to solve fun challenges.
  • Builds Teamwork: When students work together, they can learn to share ideas and cooperate.
  • Develops Fine Motor Skills: Coloring neatly could improve hand coordination and control.

Poki and Kiwi’s playful adventures might make problem-solving feel more like a game than a task.

4. Foster Connection with Collaborative Projects

Coloring doesn’t have to be an individual activity. You could use Poki and Kiwi coloring pages to create a group or team artwork. You can divide the image into sections and give each student a part to color. The result might look amazing on your classroom wall!

This activity isn’t just about the final result. It’s also a way for students to work as a team, share ideas, and feel proud of what they create together.

Why it Matters:

  • Promotes Teamwork: Students might learn how to collaborate and support each other.
  • Encourages Inclusion: Everyone’s contribution matters, no matter how small.
  • Builds Classroom Pride: A colorful wall could make the room feel more cheerful and united.

With Poki and Kiwi’s fun images as the foundation, this activity might become a class favorite.

5. Explore the World Through Cross-Curricular Learning

Coloring pages can connect to lessons in many subjects. You might use Poki and Kiwi’s adventures to make learning more interactive. Here are some ideas:

  • Science: A page showing Poki in a garden could lead to a discussion about plants or insects.
  • Social Studies: Pages with cultural elements could be a way to talk about traditions from around the world.
  • Literacy: Pair a coloring page with a book, and ask students to compare the two stories.

These activities could help students see how different subjects work together. Coloring pages might make learning feel exciting and new.

Why it Matters:

  • Sparks Curiosity: Exploring different topics might inspire students to ask more questions.
  • Supports Visual Learners: Hands-on activities could help kids understand ideas better.
  • Makes Lessons Memorable: Creative approaches might stick with students longer.

Using Poki and Kiwi coloring pages, you could turn simple activities into chances to learn and grow.

6. Encourage Emotional Expression through Color Choices

Allowing students to choose colors based on their emotions could help them express feelings that they might not easily articulate. For example, ask students to color a scene based on how they’re feeling that day. This can open discussions about emotional awareness and self-expression, fostering a safe environment for students to connect with their emotions and others.

Why it Matters:

  • Discuss Emotions: Exploring emotions can inspire students to open up and create better relationships.
  • Expression through art: Art can help students express themselves.

7. Promote Fine Motor Skills Development

Coloring pages could help young students practice and improve their fine motor skills. As they color within lines, they work on controlling their hand movements, which can strengthen their fingers and hands. This is crucial for tasks like writing, cutting with scissors, or tying shoes. You can use coloring sheets regularly and increase the level of difficulty of the motifs.

Why It Matters:
Developing fine motor skills is essential for children's independence and success in school. As their skills improve, they gain more confidence in their ability to complete tasks on their own, which benefits both their learning and personal development.

Poki and Kiwi Coloring Pages: Amazing Classroom Activities

Teachers are always looking for new and fun classroom activities. Poki and Kiwi coloring pages aren’t just fun - they could help students express themselves, work together, and learn creatively. Whether you’re calming your classroom, encouraging imagination, or bringing lessons to life, these pages might be a simple yet powerful tool.

The next time you’re planning a lesson or looking for something engaging, think of Poki and Kiwi. They’re ready to bring smiles, stories, and color to your classroom.

Why Hand-Drawn Coloring Pages Are Better Than AI-Generated Designs

When you sit down with a fresh coloring page or a new coloring book, your favorite colored pencils or markers, and a little time to yourself, you’re not just filling in spaces with color. You’re connecting to something bigger: the story behind the art. 💞

In the last year, AI-generated coloring books and coloring pages are becoming more common. You can find them on Amazon or on random websites all over the internet. While AI art is super impressive and has so much potential, there’s something truly special about choosing hand-drawn coloring pages created by real artists. Of course, I am a bit biased, because on pokiandkiwi.com we only offer hand-drawn coloring pages, but I think a lot of people feel the same. That is why I am writing this article.

Let’s explore why hand-drawn coloring pages are so much better than AI-generated ones, and why they bring more joy to your coloring experience.

The Unique Touch of Human Creativity

Hand-drawn coloring pages are made with care, passion, and human imagination. Artists put their hearts into every detail, making sure each design is full of their personality. They often have a personal message or meaning behind their designs. This special touch makes coloring more fun and meaningful.

At Poki and Kiwi, all of our designs are inspired by two very real cats. Their unique personalities and quirks bring meaning to our creations, connecting us all through art. 💞

AI-generated designs, on the other hand, are impressive, but they can’t offer the same connection to a real artist. Right now, AI-generated coloring books are fairly easy to spot. They often feature a lot of greyscale or odd details. But those flaws will improve quickly. Soon we’ll see perfect AI-generated coloring books flooding the market, and kids growing up will learn how to express their creativity with these books. It’s a little bittersweet, but it’s also reality.

Mindful Coloring - Stress-Relief, Relaxation for adults
Mindful Coloring - Stress-Relief, Relaxation for adults

A Connection to the Artist

When you color a hand-drawn design, you’re connecting with the artist’s vision. Every line and pattern reflects their creativity and hard work. Of course they use tools and alter their designs on a computer or IPAD, but it's still their work of art with meaning and intention. It’s like collaborating with them to bring their art to life.

Design Quality and Variety will soon be equal

Hand-drawn designs come in all kinds of themes, like intricate mandalas, cute animals, stunning florals, and abstract patterns. Artists are always coming up with fresh ideas and making sure their designs are fun and rewarding to color. They also create pages that work for different skill levels, whether you’re a beginner or a pro.

At the moment, AI-generated designs often rely on pre-set patterns, which can make them look either boring or overly perfect. However, it’s likely that soon the quality of AI designs will match, or even surpass, that of hand-drawn pages.

But for me, it’s not really about the quality... it’s about treating yourself to something real. I love industrially produced coffee mugs: they’re flawless and practical. But I just LOVE the coffee mugs I purchased at the art fair last week by local artists. They are cute and special and I appreciate them so much, knowing that a real human poured their time and effort into creating them.

Supporting Real Artists

When you choose hand-drawn coloring pages, you’re supporting real artists who put their heart and soul into their work. Many artists rely on this as their main source of income, and your support helps them keep creating beautiful designs.

A More Relaxing and Authentic Experience

Hand-drawn coloring pages offer a warm, authentic experience. Every line and curve shows the artist’s personal touch, making your time spent coloring more enjoyable. Even the little imperfections in hand-drawn designs add charm and character that AI simply can’t replicate.

What do you think?

I definitely believe that most coloring pages will be AI-produced in the future. It’s just so convenient for teachers, parents, and adults! But I also think there will always be a time and place where people want to connect with artists and color their unique vision. While AI designs are practical, they simply can’t replace the warmth and creativity of a hand-drawn page.

Personally, I feel that all coloring pages and books created by AI should be clearly labeled as such. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with AI designs! But I believe customers deserve to know what they’re purchasing.

Can Coloring Help with Stress Relief?

Life has a way of piling things on, doesn’t it? Whether it’s work, family obligations, or just the chaos of the everyday, stress can feel like an unwelcome guest that overstays its welcome. But what if I told you that something as simple as picking up a colored pencil or marker could help ease that pressure? Sounds a bit oversimplified, right? But for many, coloring isn’t just a childhood pastime, it’s a way to unwind and reclaim a sense of calm.

Let’s explore how coloring could help with stress relief, why so many people swear by it, and how you can incorporate this creative activity into your life.

Coloring for adults: Is it a thing?

When someone hears "coloring," they probably think of crayons and kids coloring books... But coloring books for adults have become hugely popular in recent years. They feature intricate designs, beautiful patterns, and themes that appeal to grown-ups, like mandalas, florals, cute animal scenes and calming nature scenes.

For many adults, coloring is an accessible, non-intimidating way to tap into creativity. Unlike painting or sketching, which can sometimes feel daunting, coloring requires no special skills or equipment. All you need is a design you like and a set of coloring tools... simple, right?

Personally, I randomly stumbled upon the coloring community on Instagram. After a particularly stressful time, I decided to give it a shot. I got some felt-tip pens, picked up a friend's IPad and sketched a cute scene with my two cats Poki and Kiwi. I printed the scene and a day later I colored it. By the time I finished, I wasn’t worrying anymore — I was too focused on which shade of pink to use next.

How Coloring Could Help Ease Stress

Here’s where it gets interesting: many health professionals believe that creative activities like coloring might have a calming effect on the mind.

In an article called "Coloring is good for your health" published by the Mayo Clinic, it says:

"Coloring is a healthy way to relieve stress. It calms the brain and helps your body relax. This can improve sleep and fatigue while decreasing body aches, heart rate, respiration, and feelings of depression and anxiety. Although coloring isn't the ultimate cure for stress and anxiety, sitting down for a long coloring session holds great value. As you color, pay attention to your breathing rhythm, ensuring steady, full breaths from your diaphragm, and tune into your heart rate periodically if you can."

It also says that embracing the imperfect is another benefit of coloring books for adults:

"There's no right or wrong way to color. Coloring is a noncompetitive activity, so there isn't pressure to "level up," win a prize or beat the clock."

The Science of Coloring and Stress Relief

Coloring engages several parts of your brain, including the areas responsible for focus, decision-making, and motor skills. This combination could make it a gentle yet effective way to interrupt negative thought patterns. Many people report, that having a creative hobby, that is not competitive helps them to relief stress. But what does the research say?

In a 2017 study called "Sharpen Your Pencils: Preliminary Evidence that Adult Coloring Reduces Depressive Symptoms and Anxiety" researchers tested the outcome of daily coloring vs logic-based puzzles with female students. They came to the conclusion that:

"Coloring participants showed significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety after the intervention, but control participants did not."

Of course, everyone’s experience is different. What feels relaxing to one person might not work for another, and that’s okay. If you’re dealing with stress or anxiety, consulting a healthcare professional is always the best course of action.

However, if you're looking for an easy and relaxing hobby, there are many things pointing to the possibility that coloring could help you relax and practice mindfulness.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Stress-Free Coloring

If you’re ready to give coloring a try, here’s how to make the most of it:

  1. Choose a Design You Love
Start with something that resonates with you. Maybe a calming winter scene, a playful animal, or a detailed mandala. Maybe a coloring sheet design by us will spark your imagination?
  2. Set the Mood
Create a cozy environment. Light a candle, grab a cup of tea, and play soft music if it helps.
  3. Focus on the Process
Don’t worry about finishing or "getting it right." Pay attention to how the pencil feels in your hand, the texture of the paper, and the colors blending together.
  4. Tune into Your Senses
Take a deep breath. Notice the sound of the pencil scratching the paper or the faint scent of the markers. These small details can make the experience even more grounding.
  5. Take Breaks as Needed
If your mind starts to wander or you feel restless, that’s okay. Coloring isn’t about perfection. It’s about giving yourself a moment of peace.

My Personal Experience with Coloring and Stress

Coloring as an adult feels a bit nostalgic for me, as I was always a kid who loved coloring. For me, it’s the perfect combination of relaxation, mindfulness, and creativity. After completing a coloring page, I even hang it up on my walls. It’s a little reminder that I’ve accomplished something creative and uniquely mine.

More often than not, creative hobbies tend to take a backseat as we grow older, overshadowed by responsibilities and busy schedules. But I truly believe that finding time for creativity, in any form, is an important part of personal well-being. Coloring, for me, isn’t just about filling in shapes, it’s about giving myself permission to be creative.

Who Might Benefit from Coloring?

While coloring isn’t a cure-all, it’s a versatile activity that many people find relaxing and calming. It’s especially appealing for:

  • Busy Professionals: A quick way to reset after a hectic day.
  • Parents: A relaxing activity to share with kids or enjoy solo after bedtime.
  • Seniors: A low-pressure, creative outlet that engages the mind and hands.
  • Friend Groups: A coloring party with friends is so much fun!

Could Coloring Be Your New Go-To for Relaxation?

So, can coloring help with stress relief? For some people, the answer is yes. It’s simple, affordable, and—most importantly, it’s fun. Whether you’re dealing with stress or just looking for a creative escape, coloring might be worth a try.

Of course, everyone’s needs are different. If you’re experiencing stress or anxiety, it’s important to seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional. But if you’re looking for a gentle, accessible way to unwind, grab some pencils, find a design you love, and start coloring.

Who knows? You might just find that this simple activity becomes your favorite part of the day.

Mindfulness and Coloring: How it Helps, Techniques & Benefits

Life can feel overwhelming sometimes. Between work, family, life, friendships and the endless notifications on our phones, finding time to just breathe can feel like a luxury. That’s where mindfulness comes in. Mindfulness is a way to slow down and be present in the moment. While this sounds easy... for many of us it is pretty hard to stop the racing thoughts. At least it is for me... Meditation might be the best way to embrace mindfulness, but while we figure out how to start meditating - let's do something creative that many people love for practicing mindfulness.

Coloring! Yes, that same thing you did as a kid or teen, except now it’s for you... not for the fridge display. Mindful coloring has become a favorite way for many adults to unwind, recharge, and find a little moment just for themself.

Let’s dive into why this works, how to get started, and why it might just be the most fun mindfulness practice you’ll ever try.

We'll also discuss the potential benefits it offers for mental health and mental wellness. But please make sure to reach out to a professional, if you are struggling with your mental health. Also note, that every person’s experience is unique: For some, coloring might just be the perfect way to unwind and relax. Others find relaxation and mindfulness in other techniques.

What Is Mindfulness and How Does Coloring Fit In?

Mindfulness is all about paying attention to the now. Instead of worrying about tomorrow’s deadlines or replaying yesterday’s awkward conversation in your head, mindfulness encourages you to focus on what’s happening right here, right now. It's the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment. For many people, mindfulness can improve overall well-being, enhance emotional regulation, and reduce stress.

Some people practice mindfulness with yoga or meditation. But for others - maybe you? - it might mean picking up some colored pencils, crayons or markers and letting yourself get lost in a creative, calming activity like coloring. It’s a way to focus your mind without overthinking, all while doing something that feels fun and effortless.

In our experience, coloring naturally promotes mindfulness by encouraging you to focus on the task at hand. As you choose colors, fill in shapes, and pay attention to patterns, your mind quiets. This focus on repetitive, soothing motions can create a sense of "flow" with some people - a mental state where you lose track of time and become fully immersed in the activity.

How Coloring Can Promote Mindfulness

Have you ever started a project and realized an hour flew by without you even noticing? That’s the magic of a "flow state," and for many people coloring is a fantastic way to get there. When you’re focused on filling in shapes or choosing colors, your mind can take a much-needed break from overthinking.

This is especially true with patterns that have repetitive designs, like mandalas or geometric shapes. They give your brain something to focus on, but not something so difficult that it stresses you out.

1. Stress Relief Through Coloring?

Let’s face it: life is stressful. Work deadlines, family obligations, school assignments and the chaos of everyday life can make it hard to unwind. But here’s the thing: when you’re coloring, those stressors might fade into the background. At least many people that practice coloring as a hobby feel that way.

Everyone is different and there is no right or wrong when it comes to how people relax and manage stress. For some people coloring is a wonderful way to relief stress, for others it might not be the perfect fit. The only way to find out, is to try!

2. Getting Started with Mindful Coloring

If you’re new to coloring, don’t worry, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about enjoying the process. Here are a few simple tips to get started:

  • Pick a Theme You Love: Whether it’s animals, winter scenes, or intricate patterns, choose something that sparks joy for you. If you're into cute animal scenes (especially with cats) check out our coloring pages featuring Poki & Kiwi.
  • Breathe as You Color: Pay attention to your breathing as you color. Slow, deep breaths can make the experience even more calming.
  • Go Slow: There’s no rush. Let yourself enjoy every stroke of the pencil/marker/crayon.

3. While Coloring: Tune into Your Senses

Mindfulness involves paying attention to all of your senses. As you color, take a moment to notice what you’re experiencing:

  • Sight: Observe the colors you’ve chosen and how they flow together in your design. Notice the details, shadows, and highlights as you fill in each area. Notice which color palette emerges and how those colors make you feel in the moment.
  • Touch: Feel the pencil, marker, or crayon in your hand. Pay attention to the pressure you apply as the color transfers to the paper, and notice the texture of the paper itself.
  • Sound: Listen to the gentle scratch of the pencil or swish of the marker. These sounds can be soothing and grounding. Color slowly and those sounds can trigger relaxation.
  • Smell: Notice the subtle (or in case of alcohol-based markers - strong) smell of the coloring tools, the paper, and even the space around you. Each element adds to the sensory experience. You could light a scented candle or use essential oils for even more sensory experience.

Pro Tip: Start with something small. A single printable coloring sheet or a mini design is perfect. It’s not about how much you finish, it’s about how it makes you feel.

3. The Mental Health Benefits of Coloring

Coloring is fun! But it could actually be good for your mental health. While everyone’s experience is different, many people say that coloring helps them feel less anxious and more focused.

In a 2017 study called "Sharpen Your Pencils: Preliminary Evidence that Adult Coloring Reduces Depressive Symptoms and Anxiety" researchers tested the outcome of daily coloring with female students. They came to the conclusion that:

"Coloring participants showed significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety after the intervention, but control participants did not."

Of course, reaching out to a professional should always be the first thing someone does, when struggling mental health.

4. Why Coloring and Mindfulness Go Together So Well

One of the reasons coloring is so beloved by many is that it combines creativity with mindfulness. Traditional meditation asks you to sit quietly and focus on your breath (or listen to guided meditations), which can be challenging.

Coloring, on the other hand, gives you something tangible to focus on. It’s active, but not overwhelming. You’re still practicing mindfulness, but in a way that might be easier for some. Also, colors might have a bigger effect on us, than we realize. Seeing vibrant colors or great color combinations can make you feel happy and upliftet.

5. Nostalgia Meets Relaxation

There’s something magical about revisiting a childhood activity like coloring. It’s comforting, familiar, and just plain fun. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to bust out a new set of colored pencils or markers?

Personal Note: On rainy days, I love coloring moody scenes, think snowflakes, fireplaces, or cozy blankets. It takes me back to simpler times, and I always finish feeling a little more peaceful and grounded.

6. Making Coloring a Ritual

Want to make mindful coloring part of your routine? Here’s how:

  1. Create a Cozy Space: When it comes to building a routine, it can really help defining a place where coloring works best for you. For example, you could add a cute little table or a comfy chair to your space. You might also use bold colors for a creative touch or use a book as an underlay for added stability. Light a candle, grab a cup of tea, and set up your coloring spot.
  2. Pick the Right Tools: If you're a beginner, I always recommend to use whatever you already have. In my case though, I had no pencils or crayons, so I invested in a box of markers straight away. For me this worked. Find tools (pencils, markers, crayons) that make you happy and fit your preferred themes. Markers are great for creative images, adding shadows and blend colors. Pencils are great for intricate designs.
  3. Set Aside Time: Even just 15–20 minutes a day can make a big impact.

7. Popular Themes for Mindful Coloring

Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas to inspire you:

  • Cute drawings: Cute animals or characters in cozy scenes are very popular and a big hit with kids, teens and adults.
  • Seasonal drawings: Winter scenes with snowmen, fireplaces, and holiday cheer.
  • Nature Designs: Flowers, leaves, and animals that bring a sense of calm.
  • Flowers: Flowers are always a great choice, especially during spring and summer.
  • Quotes and Text: Mindful texts and quotes can help you think positive.
  • Mandalas: Perfect for repetitive, meditative coloring.

3. Customization and Control

Printable pages give you the flexibility to choose paper types, sizes, and even layout formats.

  • Paper Choices: Some people enjoy thicker paper (especially for alcohol-based markers or watercolors). Some prefer standard paper for alcohol-based markers or colored pencils. Use whatever you like or try the different paper and find your favorite!
  • Size Adjustments: Scale your design up for kids or down for compact projects like cards or bookmarks.
  • Experimentation: Print extras to try out different color schemes or practice shading techniques.

Why it matters: Personalizing your coloring experience ensures that every session fits your specific needs.

4. Eco-Friendly and Clutter-Free

While it may seem counterintuitive, printable coloring pages can be an eco-friendlier option when managed thoughtfully.

  • Print What You Need: Instead of purchasing multiple books that may go unused, you can download only the designs you’ll actually color.
  • Minimal Waste: Avoid throwing away partially used books by storing designs digitally.

Unlike mass-produced coloring books, these pages often come from small businesses or individual creators who rely on your support to continue their work.

By choosing their designs, you're helping them sustain their livelihood and encouraging the production of more original, high-quality art. It’s a meaningful way to vote with your wallet and show appreciation for their talent. Plus, many small creators use eco-friendly and ethical practices, ensuring your purchase has a positive impact.
