Mindfulness and Coloring: How it Helps, Techniques & Benefits

Life can feel overwhelming sometimes. Between work, family, life, friendships and the endless notifications on our phones, finding time to just breathe can feel like a luxury. That’s where mindfulness comes in. Mindfulness is a way to slow down and be present in the moment. While this sounds easy... for many of us it is pretty hard to stop the racing thoughts. At least it is for me... Meditation might be the best way to embrace mindfulness, but while we figure out how to start meditating - let's do something creative that many people love for practicing mindfulness.

Coloring! Yes, that same thing you did as a kid or teen, except now it’s for you... not for the fridge display. Mindful coloring has become a favorite way for many adults to unwind, recharge, and find a little moment just for themself.

Let’s dive into why this works, how to get started, and why it might just be the most fun mindfulness practice you’ll ever try.

We'll also discuss the potential benefits it offers for mental health and mental wellness. But please make sure to reach out to a professional, if you are struggling with your mental health. Also note, that every person’s experience is unique: For some, coloring might just be the perfect way to unwind and relax. Others find relaxation and mindfulness in other techniques.

What Is Mindfulness and How Does Coloring Fit In?

Mindfulness is all about paying attention to the now. Instead of worrying about tomorrow’s deadlines or replaying yesterday’s awkward conversation in your head, mindfulness encourages you to focus on what’s happening right here, right now. It's the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment. For many people, mindfulness can improve overall well-being, enhance emotional regulation, and reduce stress.

Some people practice mindfulness with yoga or meditation. But for others - maybe you? - it might mean picking up some colored pencils, crayons or markers and letting yourself get lost in a creative, calming activity like coloring. It’s a way to focus your mind without overthinking, all while doing something that feels fun and effortless.

In our experience, coloring naturally promotes mindfulness by encouraging you to focus on the task at hand. As you choose colors, fill in shapes, and pay attention to patterns, your mind quiets. This focus on repetitive, soothing motions can create a sense of "flow" with some people - a mental state where you lose track of time and become fully immersed in the activity.

How Coloring Can Promote Mindfulness

Have you ever started a project and realized an hour flew by without you even noticing? That’s the magic of a "flow state," and for many people coloring is a fantastic way to get there. When you’re focused on filling in shapes or choosing colors, your mind can take a much-needed break from overthinking.

This is especially true with patterns that have repetitive designs, like mandalas or geometric shapes. They give your brain something to focus on, but not something so difficult that it stresses you out.

1. Stress Relief Through Coloring?

Let’s face it: life is stressful. Work deadlines, family obligations, school assignments and the chaos of everyday life can make it hard to unwind. But here’s the thing: when you’re coloring, those stressors might fade into the background. At least many people that practice coloring as a hobby feel that way.

Everyone is different and there is no right or wrong when it comes to how people relax and manage stress. For some people coloring is a wonderful way to relief stress, for others it might not be the perfect fit. The only way to find out, is to try!

2. Getting Started with Mindful Coloring

If you’re new to coloring, don’t worry, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about enjoying the process. Here are a few simple tips to get started:

  • Pick a Theme You Love: Whether it’s animals, winter scenes, or intricate patterns, choose something that sparks joy for you. If you're into cute animal scenes (especially with cats) check out our coloring pages featuring Poki & Kiwi.
  • Breathe as You Color: Pay attention to your breathing as you color. Slow, deep breaths can make the experience even more calming.
  • Go Slow: There’s no rush. Let yourself enjoy every stroke of the pencil/marker/crayon.

3. While Coloring: Tune into Your Senses

Mindfulness involves paying attention to all of your senses. As you color, take a moment to notice what you’re experiencing:

  • Sight: Observe the colors you’ve chosen and how they flow together in your design. Notice the details, shadows, and highlights as you fill in each area. Notice which color palette emerges and how those colors make you feel in the moment.
  • Touch: Feel the pencil, marker, or crayon in your hand. Pay attention to the pressure you apply as the color transfers to the paper, and notice the texture of the paper itself.
  • Sound: Listen to the gentle scratch of the pencil or swish of the marker. These sounds can be soothing and grounding. Color slowly and those sounds can trigger relaxation.
  • Smell: Notice the subtle (or in case of alcohol-based markers - strong) smell of the coloring tools, the paper, and even the space around you. Each element adds to the sensory experience. You could light a scented candle or use essential oils for even more sensory experience.

Pro Tip: Start with something small. A single printable coloring sheet or a mini design is perfect. It’s not about how much you finish, it’s about how it makes you feel.

3. The Mental Health Benefits of Coloring

Coloring is fun! But it could actually be good for your mental health. While everyone’s experience is different, many people say that coloring helps them feel less anxious and more focused.

In a 2017 study called "Sharpen Your Pencils: Preliminary Evidence that Adult Coloring Reduces Depressive Symptoms and Anxiety" researchers tested the outcome of daily coloring with female students. They came to the conclusion that:

"Coloring participants showed significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety after the intervention, but control participants did not."

Of course, reaching out to a professional should always be the first thing someone does, when struggling mental health.

4. Why Coloring and Mindfulness Go Together So Well

One of the reasons coloring is so beloved by many is that it combines creativity with mindfulness. Traditional meditation asks you to sit quietly and focus on your breath (or listen to guided meditations), which can be challenging.

Coloring, on the other hand, gives you something tangible to focus on. It’s active, but not overwhelming. You’re still practicing mindfulness, but in a way that might be easier for some. Also, colors might have a bigger effect on us, than we realize. Seeing vibrant colors or great color combinations can make you feel happy and upliftet.

5. Nostalgia Meets Relaxation

There’s something magical about revisiting a childhood activity like coloring. It’s comforting, familiar, and just plain fun. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to bust out a new set of colored pencils or markers?

Personal Note: On rainy days, I love coloring moody scenes, think snowflakes, fireplaces, or cozy blankets. It takes me back to simpler times, and I always finish feeling a little more peaceful and grounded.

6. Making Coloring a Ritual

Want to make mindful coloring part of your routine? Here’s how:

  1. Create a Cozy Space: When it comes to building a routine, it can really help defining a place where coloring works best for you. For example, you could add a cute little table or a comfy chair to your space. You might also use bold colors for a creative touch or use a book as an underlay for added stability. Light a candle, grab a cup of tea, and set up your coloring spot.
  2. Pick the Right Tools: If you're a beginner, I always recommend to use whatever you already have. In my case though, I had no pencils or crayons, so I invested in a box of markers straight away. For me this worked. Find tools (pencils, markers, crayons) that make you happy and fit your preferred themes. Markers are great for creative images, adding shadows and blend colors. Pencils are great for intricate designs.
  3. Set Aside Time: Even just 15–20 minutes a day can make a big impact.

7. Popular Themes for Mindful Coloring

Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas to inspire you:

  • Cute drawings: Cute animals or characters in cozy scenes are very popular and a big hit with kids, teens and adults.
  • Seasonal drawings: Winter scenes with snowmen, fireplaces, and holiday cheer.
  • Nature Designs: Flowers, leaves, and animals that bring a sense of calm.
  • Flowers: Flowers are always a great choice, especially during spring and summer.
  • Quotes and Text: Mindful texts and quotes can help you think positive.
  • Mandalas: Perfect for repetitive, meditative coloring.

How to Start Coloring as an Adult: A Beginner’s Guide & Products

Coloring is a calming, creative, and therapeutic hobby for adults. More and more people embrace coloring as a method to be creative, relax and unwind. Whether you want to reduce stress, improve your concentration, or simply enjoy a creative hobby, coloring offers numerous benefits. In this beginner's guide on, we’ll walk you through how to start coloring as an adult, providing the essential tools, tips, and resources to get you going on this wonderful journey. And if you're wondering how I know... I have been in your shoes! Starting coloring as an adult was a wonderful experience for me. It was in fact so wonderful that I started this project "Poki and Kiwi" to create my own coloring pages and share them with the world.

1. Why Should You Start Coloring as an Adult?

Coloring as an adult is much more than just filling in shapes with crayons, pencils or alcholo-based markers, it’s a way to take a break from life’s stresses, focus your mind, and even tap into your creative side. Studies show that coloring has therapeutic benefits, such as reducing anxiety and lowering stress levels, similar to mindfulness meditation. Coloring designs that bring you joy can help you relax and provide a focused mental escape, making it an ideal hobby to unwind after a stressful day at work.

But that’s not all. Coloring also stimulates your brain’s creative pathways, allowing you to express yourself freely. It improves fine motor skills and enhances concentration and focus. So, whether you’re looking for a calming activity to end your day or a creative outlet to explore, coloring offers something for everyone.

2. How to start: What You Need to Begin

Starting your coloring journey is easy and affordable. Here’s a list of essentials you’ll need to dive into this amazing new hobby:

Coloring Pages or Coloring Books

The first thing you’ll need is a coloring book or printable pages. There are so many themes available, so you can pick something that excites and motivates you. If you love intricate designs, try a mandala coloring page or book. If you enjoy nature, there are plenty of floral-themed options. If you like cute animals, check out our coloring pages with Poki and Kiwi.

  • Recommendation: You can buy a coloring book right away, but it could make a lot of sense to first try printable coloring pages. Coloring pages allow you to print them multiple times, so you can try different techniques and colors! They also allow you to dip your toe into multiple different genres - from cute to intricate - so you can find what works best for you.

Coloring Tools

Although tools play a big role in your coloring journey, we generally recommend to start with what you already have. If you want to level up your coloring here are a few options:

  • Colored Pencils: Ideal for detailed shading and blending. They offer more control than markers or pens, which is why many adult colorists prefer them for intricate designs.
    • RecommendationPrismacolor Premier Colored Pencils are a top choice. They’re known for their smooth application and wide color range.
  • Markers: If you want bold, vibrant colors, shading and color blending, markers are the way to go. They’re great for filling large areas quickly.
    • Recommendation: Try Ohuhu Markers, they are our personal favorites and are loved by many hobby colorists for the relatively cheap price and wide color range.
  • Gel Pens: Perfect for adding fine details, white, glitter, and metallic accents. They’re especially useful for outlining and adding texture to your designs.
    • RecommendationSakura Gelly Roll Gel Pens are popular for their smooth flow and vibrant, sparkly colors.

Accessories

A few handy accessories can make your coloring experience even better!

  • Sharpener: To keep your pencils in top shape, you’ll need a good sharpener. The Prismacolor Pencil Sharpenerworks great for keeping those pencils nice and sharp.
  • Erasers: A kneaded eraser is a must-have for soft corrections. It’s gentle on paper and perfect for lightening up sections without damaging the artwork.
  • Marker Storage: If you use markers (like the Ohuhu Markers) you can look into a nice storage option for them. This might help you sort your markers and find the color you're looking for much faster.
  • IPad or Tablet: If you want to color mostly digital, we can whole-heartedly recommend the IPad in combination with Procreate. Procreate is a wonderful, very affordable App, that's perfect for digital coloring.
  • Paper Cutter: A paper cutter comes in super handy, whenever you want to trim your colorings (for example for framing).

3. Finding Your Coloring Style

Coloring is a personal experience, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. As you explore this hobby, you’ll find that there are several different styles to choose from. Here are a few to consider:

  • Abstract: This style is all about creative freedom. Play around with colors without worrying about creating realistic depictions. Abstract coloring can be an excellent stress-reliever as it allows you to relax and just have fun.
  • Realistic: If you enjoy a challenge, realistic coloring might be for you. Try replicating real-life colors and shading techniques. This style is great for honing your attention to detail and practicing techniques like blending and shadowing.
  • Creative: If you’re feeling adventurous, why not combine different mediums? Use pencils for shading, markers for bold sections, and gel pens for accents. The possibilities are endless when you mix techniques, and it can be a great way to learn new skills.

4. Setting the Mood

Coloring is cozy! So setting the mood to color can greatly enhance your coloring experience. Here are a few ideas to help you create the perfect atmosphere for coloring:

  • Find a Quiet Space: A peaceful space with good lighting is ideal for coloring. Set up a comfortable chair or table where you can focus and immerse yourself in your coloring book. If you want to color in bed or on the sofa, use a book or clip board as an underlay.
  • Ambiance: Many people enjoy coloring with their favorite music or their favorite tv series. Whatever makes you feel comfy and cozy!
  • Time: You can set aside a fixed time (for example 30min) to color or simply go with the flow. You don’t need to rush the process. Let yourself fully relax and enjoy the moment. You can work on one page however long you like, hours, days or months!
Create a comfy and cozy atmosphere for coloring

5. Tips for Beginners

If you’re a complete beginner, start with simpler designs before jumping into detailed ones. This will help you build confidence and allow you to practice basic techniques.

  • Recommendation: Look for beginner-friendly, bold and easy books or coloring pages, if you want to start easy. But more important than that is, that the coloring page or book excites you! Printable coloring pages is a great option for beginners, as they let you try different styles.

Experiment with different Tools and Techniques as a coloring beginner

Coloring is as complex or easy as you like! You can fill in shapes and spaces or learn complex techniques. As a bigger you can experiment and find what techniques and tools you like best.

  • Layering: Start with a light base layer and build up darker colors for depth.
  • Blending: Use blending pencils or markers to smooth out color transitions.
  • Texturing: Add texture to your designs by experimenting with different strokes and pressures.
  • Highlighting: Add white or bitter highlights with pens to give your art more depth.

Be Patient

Remember, coloring is not about perfection... it’s about enjoying the process! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Let your creativity flow without self-judgment.

10 Cozy Benefits of Coloring for Adults: Relax, be Creative, and Unwind

In today’s fast-paced world, finding time to relax and de-stress is very difficult (at least in our experience). While mindfulness apps, yoga, and other wellness trends get much of the spotlight, there’s a simple, affordable activity that’s becoming more and more popular with adults: coloring. Yes, coloring isn’t just for kids anymore! 🙂 In our opinion, it’s a powerful tool for stress relief, creative expression, and even mental health.

We believe coloring can be a cozy and comforting activity for adults. In this post, we’ll explore 10 unique benefits of coloring based on individual experiences. Of course all points are very individual and every experience is different! Nevertheless, we feel that coloring is worth a try if you want to find a hobby, that is relaxing for your mind. Whether you’re new to coloring or already a fan, we hope you'll get a fresh perspective on how this childhood pastime can help you thrive even today as an adult.

1. Coloring Might Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are common challenges in today’s busy world. For me stress and anxiety increased dramatically when I became an adult, but for others stress and anxiety may have been a constant pressure their whole life.

Coloring has helped many people induce a meditative-like state. This makes it an effective way to lower stress hormones, such as cortisol, and encourage relaxation. Corewell Health explains that coloring can generate mindfulness, allowing your mind to rest and recharge after a busy day.

Many people feel that coloring helps them calm down after a stressful day and be present in the moment. But of course, every person and situation is different. If you struggle with mental health challenges the best course of action is always to consult a mental health professional. If you're looking for a new cozy and comfy hobby, you could give coloring a try and see if it helps you to relax!

2. Coloring Could Enhance Focus and Concentration

Coloring isn’t just relaxing! It’s also challenging for the mind. It requires you to pay attention to details, choose colors (randomly or thoughtfully) and stay within the lines. This focus can help you practice mindfulness and improve your ability to concentrate on tasks.

Coloring fans often report, that they feel they can stay concentrated when coloring and get into a flow state.

3. Unlocks Your Creativity

Many of us lose touch with our creative side as we grow older, but coloring can reignite that spark! Experimenting with color combinations, patterns, and shading techniques gives you a creative outlet without the pressure of producing "perfect" art.

Winter Coloring Pages by Poki and Kiwi

We feel very strongly, that creativity should be part of everyone's life in some shape or form. Some may find creativity in family actives, in gardening, in wood working or in their professional lives. Coloring can trigger another outlet to just create without pressure or fear.

4. Encourages Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of staying present in the moment. For me it is difficult to be mindful and present at all times, but it's something I've been working on for a long time. It is a skill that can improve your mental health and overall well-being, that's for sure. Coloring can help you focus on the here and now, quieting intrusive thoughts and fostering a sense of calm.

Many coloring enthusiasts report that it's their favorite mindfulness practice, because it combines being creative with being in the here and now.

5. Colors Could Boost Your Mood

Many people feel that colors can influence their emotions. I can say, that this is definitely true for me. Warm hues like yellows, browns, pinks and oranges lift my spirit, while cool tones like blue and green promote relaxation. Choosing colors intuitively while coloring allows you to explore, if colors affect your mood as well!

6. Provides a Digital Detox

It is generally accepted, that being offline regularly can be good for you. If you are feeling like you need a digital detox, coloring offers a chance to unplug and reconnect with tactile, offline activities. Even a short session can provide relief from digital fatigue.

7. Can Train You to Problem Solve

Coloring encourages you to think about patterns, sequences, and how colors interact. Of course, not everyone will dive deep into complex patterns and shading techniques. I for example enjoy simple coloring without a lot of complexity. However, some people find great pleasure in problem solve while coloring, finding new ways to layer their colors or create complex color techniques. What a wonderful way to train your brain!

8. Improves Fine Motor Skills

As adults, we don’t often think about our fine motor skills. They were bad when we were kids and now they are better, right? Yes! But,... coloring practices hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while also being fun! It could be especially beneficial for adults struggling with fine motor skills or seniors.

9. Offers a Gateway to Art Therapy

Art therapy uses creative activities like drawing, painting, and coloring to help people process emotions and trauma. While not a substitute for professional therapy, coloring could serve as a therapeutic activity for some people. Coloring enthusiasts often state that it promotes their mental health and helps them to keep in touch with their own self.

10. Builds Community and Connection

Coloring doesn’t have to be a solo activity! You can color with your friends, organize a coloring party or join a color buddy session (where multiple people color the same page and share their results). Of course you can be part of an online community. There are many people sharing their artworks with the world on Instagram or TikTok. You could follow our account and connect with other people who love share the same hobby.

A tipp from us: Just make sure that you are not comparing your art with others... coloring is something very personal and positive. Don't feel discouraged by the results of other people .. coloring is something you do for yourself. 🙂
